Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage inside the tooth’s pulp, preventing the need for extraction.
A root canal is necessary if the tooth pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, cracks, or trauma, causing pain or sensitivity.
Thanks to modern anaesthesia, root canal treatment is generally not painful. You may experience mild discomfort afterward, but it’s manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
The procedure typically requires 2 or 3 treatment sessions of about 45 to 60 minutes. In some instances the treatment might be done in one session that can be up to 4 hours long, depending on the complexity of the tooth and the extent of infection or damage.
After the treatment, you may experience some soreness for a few days. A follow-up visit is required to place a crown or filling to restore the tooth.
